Lately, we've had a lot of clients complaining about receiving large amounts of junk mail to their inbox and asking how stop this problem. So, we have gathered a list of tips and tricks to help stop junk mail from clogging your inbox.
1.) Watch Out for Those Checkboxes -
When you sign up for something on the Web, there is often some innocent-looking text at the end of the form saying something like: "YES, I want to be contacted by select third parties concerning products I might be interested in." Quite often, the checkbox next to that text is already checked and your email address may be given or sold to spammers.
2.) Don't Unsubscribe from ANY Spam Email - Once you have identified a message as spam, don't believe a single word in it, least of all any unsubscription information it contains.
If you try to unsubscribe, the best that can happen is nothing. If you are unlucky, you'll likely get more spam afterwards, since you have verified that you do indeed receive messages at that email address.
3.)
Do NOT purchase OR EVEN Visit a Web Site Listed in a Spam Email
-
Spam continues to plague us simply because it works ... and it works because a few people who receive spams innocently click on the links provided, AND believe it or not SOME even take them up on their offers.
Spam works and exists because it is so cheap to send an email to hundreds of thousands of people and it pays off if only a fraction of the recipients respond.
If everyone stopped visiting and buying from spammers sites these people would cease this form of marketing within weeks and it would cease to exisit.
4.) Use you web hosting Spam Filter - For those of you on E-State Media's hosting package, a quick way to put a stop to spam is to turn on Spam Assassin. Simply log into your Cpanel, go to the Spam Assassin area and enable it.
Span Assassin doesn't delete emails, but rather rewrite the subject headers adding the text " *****SPAM***** " to it. This lets you set up filters in your email client ( like Outlook Express ) to redirect spam emails to a special inbox or directly to your Delete bin.
To set up your Outlook Express to filter these mails, do the following:
1.) Create a folder to hold the spam messages, with File , New , Folder. Give it a descriptive name like Spam . Click OK .
2.)
Open Tools , Message Rules , Mail . If you already have some mail rules, you will be prompted to click New to create a new mail rule. If this is your first mail rule, skip directly to the next step.
3.) On the New Mail Rule panel, check the checkboxes labeled: Where the Subject line contains specific words and Move it to the specified folder . In the Rule Description box, click contains specific words . Enter ***SPAM*** , click Add , and click OK . Click specified folder , select your Spam folder, and click OK . Finally, type in a descriptive name for your filter, like Spam Filter .
4.) Click OK to close the New Mail Rule box, then OK to close the Message Rules box. Periodically check your Spam folder for unsolicited commercial messages, and delete them. Note that you can also direct these emails to your delete bin instead of a spam folder if you so desire.
